Trends in Clean Beauty in 2022

Last updated on: 2022

July 15 is National Clean Beauty Day! “Clean Beauty” is somewhat undefined in the beauty industry, but it usually means products that are good for people and good for the planet. Consumers have become much more aware of their personal impact on the planet and even more aware of brands’ carbon footprints in producing their favorite products. Consumers also read ingredient lists more often than not now, scouring for “Clean and Green” labels. NielsenIQ defines truly clean beauty products as those that are free from parabens, sulfates, phthalates, artificial colors and fragrances, plus 600 other ingredients. But there have been more creative trends in clean beauty in 2022 by brands to go “clean.”

These are some notable trends in Clean Beauty in 2022!

Packaging: The Breakdown

One big step many beauty brands have taken in the last few years is toward more sustainable efforts with packaging. Eliminating secondary packaging has been an easy step for some like OLAPLEX, but there’s been a push for better refillable packaging, plastic-free or zero waste products. Biodegradable paper packaging is being explored more and more, but refillable packaging has certainly grabbed everyone’s attention. Celebrity brands like Rihanna’s Fenty Skin and Kim Kardashian’s recently launched skincare line SKKN BY KIM have put the refillable packaging trend in the spotlight. Expect to see lots more brands following suit soon!

Simple to Read, Simple to Use

Consumers are much more interested in what goes on or into their bodies these days. Social media is, of course, partially to thank for this, but an increasingly growing beauty industry has also created more discerning consumers. Immediately recognizable ingredient lists on packaging design has become trendier, moving ingredients from a back-of-the-label table to being a featured benefit of purchasing the product and differentiating brands from their peers. The simpler the ingredient list is, the better, as consumers feel they’re putting cleaner and more natural products on their skin. Brands also proudly display “100% Vegan” on labels to encourage consumers that their production is ethical.

The Switch Up to Serums

Natural oils have become even more of a favorite amongst the skincare obsessed this year. Replacing cream moisturizers with facial oils can keep skin hydrated longer and reduce inflammation. The antioxidant and antibacterial properties are also very beneficial. When thinking of refillable packaging, too, oils are easier to transfer than creams and lotions.

The Future of Clean Beauty

So what’s next for Clean Beauty? If these trends in clean beauty in 2022 continue, we’re sure to see more and more brands and stores embracing clean and green efforts in the interest of our planet. More natural choices, familiar ingredients and upcycled packaging are sure to continue being a feature of clean beauty products going forward, but what excites me most is the innovation that’s possible for new, cleaner products. Who knows? With refillable packaging, maybe someone will actually be able to figure out how to get toothpaste back in the tube!
