How to Develop Strong Client Communication

Last updated on: 2018

Agency Life

In a fast moving, ever changing digital environment, strong communication with clients is essential and creates great benefits when done right. Good communication is not only valued by your client but it makes communicating back to your internal team more effective. Below are five simple tactics to improve your communication skills and strengthen client relations.

Be Transparent

Transparency is key when working closely with a client. It is OKAY to not always know the answer right away. A simple way to be transparent when you’re in a situation of not knowing a certain answer is to tell them you will circle back after confirming the answer with your team internally. This tactic helps avoid more unclear questions and answers down the road. Being transparent also includes asking questions to your clients. Asking questions allows you to gain a deeper understanding of your client’s goals and more knowledge on their expectations

Constantly Update

Keeping a client constantly in the loop is essential. Updating a client on a both new and ongoing projects helps avoid any miscommunication or foreseeable issues. This tactic relates back to transparency. Following up after a meeting or a call with a simple email of bullet points or a few sentences on topics discussed during the meeting keeps everyone on the same page.

Human Interaction and Connection

Human interaction is a great benefit to have with a client. Meeting with a client as much possible face to face helps putting a face to an email thread and establishes human connection. It also helps break down a barrier to remind them they are dealing with a human being.

Leverage Your Hard Work

Brag, brag, brag! It is easy, when working with a variety of clients, to be busy and look over highlighting all of your hard work. In an agency, you are not only representing yourself but are also acting as a liaison between your company and your client. Showing enthusiasm in an email while sharing an exciting result or update is a great way to remind your client all the hard work you are putting in day-to-day.

Be Confident

You can be informal and still be professional when communication with a client. Using high energy in an email reflects your attitude about any situation. Confidence is one of the most important traits to have when communicating with a client. They are trusting you to get a job done and you need to reassure them that you are the best person for the job.  A simple way to show confidence is by keeping high-energy communication through emails and calls even when there could be an issue at hand.

The ability to communicate effectively is an important skill in today’s world. By continuously developing and improving communication skills, you will create more value to yourself and your work.
